How do I get my money back?
If you want to take invested money out of Stash, you’ll need to sell those investments first. The money from the sale will be held for 2 business days (in accordance with federal law) before you can transfer it to an external bank account.
To transfer money to a linked external bank account in the app:
- Open the app
- Tap Transfer on the bottom navigation bar
- Select the accounts you wish to move money from and to
- Enter the amount you wish to transfer
- Tap Continue to move forward
- Tap Transfer to confirm the transaction
To transfer money to a linked external bank online:
- Log in to your account via stash.com
- Select Home
- Select Personal portfolio
- Select Transfer
- Select the accounts you wish to move money from and to
- Enter the amount you wish to transfer
- Click Confirm to move forward
- Click Make Transfer to confirm the transaction
When you transfer money out of Stash, it will be removed from your Stash account immediately. However, it may take up to three business days for the transferred money to appear in your external bank account. The exact length of time depends on how quickly your external bank processes ACH transfers.
There are four factors that may impact your ability to transfer money out of your Stash Invest portfolio:
- Invested funds: If you want to transfer money out of Stash that you’ve invested, you’ll need to sell those investments first.
- Unsettled sales: Funds from the sale of an investment will take 2 business days to settle. The money should be available to transfer on the third business day.
- Deposit holds: We hold recent deposits for up to 5 business days to protect our clients from fraud. Your money will be available to transfer on the sixth business day, or sooner.
- Referral and promotional funds: Referral and promotional funds must remain in your Stash account for 90 calendar days before they can be transferred.
Please note that transfers are only processed on business days during banking hours. Business days are Monday through Friday, and do not include weekends or U.S. federal holidays.
