What is ‘the market’?

A market is a place or channel (physical or digital) that facilitates in the exchange of goods and services. Some examples from the world of investing include stock markets (like the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ).

When people refer to ‘the Market,’ they are often talking about the S&P 500 or Dow Jones Index. These indices are often used as a stand-in for general market sentiment. They may not be representative of the U.S. economy as a whole.
