FAQ: Linking an External Bank Account

How do I link my bank account to Stash?

Linking your external bank account enables you to move funds on and off of Stash, so that you can invest for the long term. Linking your bank to your Stash account is simple. You can have one external bank account connected to Stash at a time, but you can easily change these settings.

There are two ways you can link your external bank account using Plaid, the external bank linking service. You can connect “Instantly” by securely logging in with your bank credentials for immediate verification, or “Manually” by verifying small micro-deposits sent to your account, which may take longer to complete. Depending on your external bank’s setup, you might have more success with one method than the other.

Use this link and follow the prompts to link an external bank account or change your bank link. For additional guidance, follow the steps below:

How do I link my external bank instantly with my banking credentials?

  • Tap your initials (iOS) or hamburger icon (Android) in the upper-left corner. On the web, click your name in the top right corner.
  • Under “Settings,” tap Manage external bank account.
  • Tap Connect my bank account, or Connect a different account, or use this link
  • Tap the Link with Plaid button and follow the instructions.
  • When you get to the Plaid “Choose how you’ll link your bank account” screen, select Instant and then the Continue button.
  • Search for and select your non-Stash banking institution.
  • Log in with your external banking credentials on your screen to complete the linking process

How do I manually link my external bank with micro-deposits?

Micro-deposits are two small amounts (Plaid Micro-deposits will always be $0.01) that get deposited into your external bank account when you provide your external bank’s account and routing numbers. You will be asked to confirm a code on the micro-deposit transaction to verify your account ownership and access, which allows you to link your external bank account to Stash. Follow these steps to link manually:

  • Tap your initials (iOS) or hamburger icon (Android) in the upper-left corner. On the web, click your name in the top right corner.
  • Under “Settings,” tap Manage external bank account.
  • Select Connect my bank account, or Connect a different account. You can also use this link.
  • Select the Link with Plaid button at the bottom of your screen and follow the instructions.
When you get to the Plaid “Choose how you’ll link your bank account” screen, select Manual and then the Continue button.
  • Enter your external bank account’s routing number and account number. Double-check that these are entered correctly to avoid any issues.
  • A micro-deposit transaction of $0.01 will be sent to your external bank account, and you will be asked to verify a code found on the micro-deposit transaction in your external bank’s transaction feed.
  • Enter this code on the Plaid screen to complete your bank link.
