FAQ: Subscription and Payment Methods

How do I change my subscription plan?

Stash offers two subscription plans: Stash Starter ($3/month or $32/year) and Stash+ ($12/month or $129/year).
Stash makes it easy to upgrade or downgrade your subscription plan at any time from the app or web.

Follow these steps to change your subscription plan in the app or on the web:

  1. Use this link to view the “Your current plan” page. Here, you will be able to view the features included in each plan before making any changes.
  2. Tap the Change subscription button under the plan you want to change to.
  3. Follow the prompts to complete your plan change.

Curious about how this will affect your billing cycles? Here are some examples:

If you pay monthly and change your plan:

  • Upgrade: You’ll instantly receive access to the Stash+ plan and be charged for your new plan, with a prorated credit for the unused time on your Starter plan applied to the first Stash+ subscription fee charge. For example, let’s assume your billing cycle renews on the 5th of each month. On January 20th, you upgrade your subscription plan from Stash Starter ($3/month) to Stash+ ($12/month). You’ll instantly receive access to the Stash+ plan. You’ll get access to Stash+ right away. Because you already paid for your Starter plan (from January 21–February 4), you’ll get a credit for that unused time. That credit will automatically reduce your first Stash+ payment, so you only pay the difference.
  • Downgrade: You’ll instantly receive access to the Stash Starter plan with a prorated credit for the unused time on your Stash+ plan. This will be applied to your next Starter subscription charge(s) until it is exhausted. For example, let’s assume your billing cycle renews on the 5th of each month. On January 20th, you downgrade your subscription plan from Stash+ ($12/month) to Stash Starter ($3/month).
You’ll still have full access to your Stash+ plan until the 5th of February, at which point the downgrade will go into effect. At this point, you will be billed your new plan price ($3/month), using any prorated credits first. When the credits are exhausted, your preferred payment method will be billed to pay any remaining balance.

If you pay yearly and change your plan:

  • Upgrade: You’ll instantly receive access to the Stash+ plan and be charged for your new plan, with a prorated credit for the unused time on your Starter plan applied to the first Stash+ subscription fee charge. For example, let’s assume your billing cycle renews on June 5th of each year. On December 1st, you upgrade your subscription plan from Stash Starter to Stash+. The plan change will take effect immediately, so you’ll have full access to the features of Stash+. You’ll receive a new invoice on December 2nd, which will credit the unused time on your Stash Starter plan and charge you a full year for the Stash+ plan. Your yearly billing cycle will reset to December 2nd-December 1st.
  • Downgrade: You’ll retain full access to your Stash+ plan until your next billing anniversary (i.e. on the day of the month you were previously charged your annual fee, in the next month in which it occurs), and you will receive a prorated credit for the unused time on your Stash+ plan. This will be applied to your next Starter subscription charge(s) until it is exhausted. For example, let’s assume your billing cycle renews on June 5th of each year. On December 15th, you downgrade your subscription plan from Stash+ to Stash Starter. You’ll still have full access to your Stash+ plan until January 4th. On January 5th (your next billing anniversary), you’ll be downgraded to Stash Starter, and you will be billed accordingly, using any prorated credits first. When the credits are exhausted, your preferred payment method will be billed to pay any remaining balance.

How do I change my subscription billing frequency?

We offer two billing frequencies for your convenience: monthly and yearly. You can change the billing frequency of your subscription plan on the web or in the app whenever you need to.

Follow these steps to change your billing frequency in the app or on the web:

  1. Tap here to navigate to the “Change billing frequency” page.
  2. Tap between Yearly or Monthly frequencies, then select the Save changes button to confirm.
  3. Follow the prompts to finalize your changes.

Curious about how this might affect your payment schedule?

Monthly to yearly:
When you switch from a monthly cycle to a yearly cycle, we’ll start your yearly billing at the beginning of your next billing cycle.
For example: Your monthly billing period is from the 5th of September to the 4th October. On the 15th of September, you change to a yearly billing cycle. On the 5th of October (the next month), we’ll bill you the full amount for your yearly subscription.

Yearly to monthly:
When you switch from a yearly plan to a monthly plan, we’ll give you a prorated credit for the remaining months on your yearly subscription.
For example: Your yearly billing cycle is from September 5th to September 4th. On February 25th, you change to a monthly billing cycle. The next day (February 26th), you will be charged for the monthly billing period of February 26th-March 25th and we’ll give you a prorated credit towards your subsequent monthly invoices for the remaining months on your annual plan. These credits will be used for subscription payments until the credits are exhausted.

How do I change my subscription payment method? How do I set a preferred payment method?

You can only have one linked credit or debit card and one linked external checking or savings account for your Stash account. It is a good idea to make sure that you have the right card and/or account linked and set as your preferred payment method. This will ensure that your subscription will be charged to the right place.

Follow these steps to add, replace, or update a linked bank payment method:

  1. Open this link to go to your “Payment methods” page
  2. If the desired bank is not already listed, tap on the linked bank and select “Replace bank link” or “Link a bank account.”
    • Click “Link with Plaid” and follow the prompts to link your new bank account. For additional details on linking your bank, reference this guide
  3. Return to your Payment Methods to update your preferred payment method if needed.

Note:  If you wish to pay your Stash subscription from your Stash Banking account, you will want to set the Banking account as your preferred payment method (see below).

Follow these steps to replace or update a linked credit or debit card used as a payment method:

  1. Open this link to go to your “Payment methods” page.
  2. Tap on the linked card and select “Replace card” or “Add a credit or debit card.”
  3. Populate the “Replace card on file” page with your updated card information and select Confirm to save your changes.
    • Be sure to update your preferred payment method if needed.

Note: You can only use a credit card as a subscription payment method.  If you also want to be able to transfer funds to/from your Stash banking account instantly, you will need to link a debit card or an external bank account. You will not be able to link your Stash debit card – this must be a card issued by a different bank.

Follow these steps to change or set your preferred payment method for your Stash subscription:

  1. Open this link to go to your “Payment methods” page.
    1. Here, you will be able to view any linked credit or debit card, any linked bank, and any Stash accounts that are eligible for your subscription payment methods.
  2. Click on the desired account and select “Make preferred payment method” to make the change.

How do I view my subscription payment history?

You can view your subscription history at any time in the Stash app. Note: subscription history is not currently viewable on the web.

In the app:

  1. Tap this link to go to your “Plan details” page.
  2. At the bottom of the page, click the See Payment History button. This will automatically open a chat with Money Coach and will display your payment history.
