How Do I Close My Stash Subscription?
We’ll be sorry to see you go! You can close your subscription at any time in the app or online at Stash.com.
Keep reading to learn what to do before you close, and how to close your subscription in the app or on the web.
To start, complete the following steps:
- Make sure your external bank is linked. Help me link my external bank
- Turn off auto-invest for your accounts. How do I turn off auto invest?
- Sell all of the investments in your IRA and wait for them to settle (up to 3 business days). I need help selling my investments
- Wait for any recent deposits to be available to withdraw (up to 6 business days). How can I make a withdrawal?
Things to know before you close your subscription:
- Retire portfolios: You’ll need to close your Retire portfolio before you close your Stash subscription. You can find the full instructions for closing your Retire portfolio here
- Note: If you’re closing your Retirement account early (before age 59 ½), you may receive fines or penalties by the IRS. You may be able to avoid some fines or penalties by transferring your Retire Portfolio to another broker, also known as an ACAT (Automated Customer Account Transfer). Learn more about ACATs here
- Custodial portfolios: If you need to close your Custodial portfolio(s), you’ll need some help from us. Please call us at 800-205-5164 from 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. ET Monday-Friday, and from 10:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m. ET Saturday and Sunday, or email us at support@stash.com.

Other notes about closing your Stash subscription:
- When you close your Personal brokerage account, all of your investments will be sold. Proceeds will be returned to you through your external linked account.
- We recommend transferring your Stash banking account balance to your external bank account before closing your Stash subscription.
- If you have an external bank account linked to Stash when your account is closed, we’ll automatically send your remaining balances to that account.
- If you don’t have an external bank account linked when your account is closed, we’ll mail you a refund check for the remaining balance. It can take 7-10 business days to receive the check.
- If you receive direct deposit into your Stash banking account, please update your direct deposit information with your employer.
- If you get a tax document, we will notify you via email, even after your subscription is closed. This email will include a link to access your tax documents on our website. Login with your same username and password.
- You might be invited to complete a survey regarding your Stash experience. Filling it out will help us gain valuable feedback we can use to improve.
Follow these steps to close your subscription:
On the app:
Note: Update your app to the latest version, otherwise you won’t be able to close in-app.
- Click here to open the Canceling Your Plan screen.
- Tap Cancel my plan.
- Follow the prompts to close your account.
Once you have completed all required steps, the closing process can take up to 10 business days. You will receive a confirmation email when all the steps are complete and your account is completely closed.
On the web:
